Western Ocean Walking Weekend

Western Ocean Walking Weekend

This fabulous summer walking break in northwest Mayo takes place in a land dominated by the North Atlantic.

The barony of Erris occupies this far corner of Mayo – a spectacular landscape of Atlantic blanket bog, high sea cliffs, low-lying peninsulas and seemingly never-ending beaches.

Next Dates :  June 2027 (exact dates tbc)

Location : The Mullet Peninsula in the NW corner of Mayo – a special place surrounded by the wild North Atlantic.

Level : Easy to moderate.

Please note that several of our hikes include stretches along sea cliffs, so this weekend is not suitable for those who suffer from vertigo or fear of heights.

Duration : Wednesday evening to Sunday afternoon (4 nights; 3.5 days walking)

Description :

Day One : We rendezvous for dinner in Belmullet (Béal an Mhuirthead), followed by driving to our excellent B&Bs out on The Mullet Peninsula itself and orientation.

Day Two : Day trip out to the wonderful, evocative Iniskea Islands, deserted since the 1930s and now home to seabirds and wildlife (subject to weather).

Day Three : The truly wonderful cliff-top loop walk at An Ceathrú Thaidhg, in the far corner of NW Mayo. We follow that with a second, shorter stroll on Erris Head’s beautiful cliff-top loop walk.

Day Four : Walking The Mullet peninsula, with its fabulous beaches and views to take the breath away. Visits along the way to a tiny ruined medieval church in a stunning location and a holy well by the sea.

Day Five : Jump back in our cars and, on the way home, visit the Céide Fields neolithic field system site and the impressive Dún Briste sea stack at Downpatrick Head. Departure.

For this walking weekend, we stay in two lovely B&Bs along the Wild Atlantic Way, where we enjoy 4 B&B nights.

Don’t worry – there will be trips to the pub!

Note : This is a car-pooling weekend, where we are all invited to take turns to drive one another to and from hikes and evening dinners in Belmullet town.

“Barry’s guided walking holiday on and around the Mullet Peninsula was simply fabulous. With comfortable, hospitable accommodation, nutritious, delicious breakfasts, the most fantastic landscape and excellent company, I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The highlight for me was Barry’s excellent knowledge of the history, legends, people and ecology of the wonderful land that is West Mayo. Roll on next year’s brilliant tours.”
