Benlevy (Mount Gable) Hike

Benlevy (Mount Gable) Hike

This moderate level day hike (with one short tougher section) takes us up Benlevy, aka Mount Gable, a big hill located near Clonbur (An Fhairche) in north County Galway.

Benlevy is to be found in the very heart of Joyce Country (Dúiche Sheoighe), a vast area along the Galway / Mayo border, named after early Anglo-Normans who made their way to Ireland seeking new lands. This remote region is likely to have retained its name, not because of any strategic importance, but simply because of its inaccessibility.

Next Dates : 12 June, 14 August 2021

Location : We meet in Clonbur, from where we will proceed to the small carpark at the beginning of our hike.

Level : Moderate. This is a loop walk, with its latter stages on a very small quiet tarmac road. You need to be comfortable walking for up to 5 hours. The one tougher section referred to is because of our descent off the hill.

Duration : 10km; approx. 5 hours.

Description :
This isolated hill affords wonderful views over Lough Corrib to the south and Lough Mask to the north. Benlevy only rises to 416m, making it much more accessible to many than its higher surrounding mountains.

This is an enjoyable hillwalk, with spectacular views and the added bonus of a deserted village and mountain lake.

Please note :
The Benlevy hillwalk is not suitable to persons aged under 16 years.
